Coalition parties recorded huge losses in the European elections last weekend. The major hit was a mere 9% for the ruling Social Democrats, but smaller coalition parties (Christian Democrats, 10%, and the liberal Freedom Union, 2%) also lost out. On the other hand, the opposition right-wing Civic Democrats and the radical left-wing Communist party strengthened their positions significantly, gaining 30% and 20% respectively.
According to the first post-elections comments by political leaders, the election outcome may lead to changes in the coalition parties as well as within the ruling coalition itself, but the resignation of the prime minister and the entire Cabinet is rather unlikely at the moment.
