A ban on cigarette sales from market stalls is effective in the Czech Republic as of January 1, 2004. According to the most recent news, the measure has only had a partial effect. While some vendors have quit selling cigarettes, others have formally changed their market stalls to newsstands and continue selling tobacco products.
We believe that effective enforcement of the ban and any consequent positive implications for PM CR remain unclear (the ban might improve PM CR's sales due to a decrease in sales of smuggled cigarettes on the domestic market). Reliable information regarding domestic cigarette sales from market stalls is unavailable, though.
