The Czech Republic had 10,292.933 people on 1 March 2001 when the population and housing census was taken, the Czech Statistics Office said yesterday. The census ascertained considerable population aging. An important fact from economic point of view is a decline of number of economic active people. While there were 5,298,300 economically active people ten years ago, the figure fell to 4,633,300 this year. It will be very difficult or expensive to keep the current pension system based on PAYGO ("pay-as-you-go") financing under such conditions.

A special Czech Parliamentary committee yesterday asked the government to review a sale contract with CSOB for assets of IPB. The government is not obliged to accept the Lower House's recommendations that it published in a report. The final agreement with CSOB, which will set the price the bank will pay, is expected to be signed soon. Last June, the state issued guarantees for IPB's assets. But the report says the government closed a contract unfavorable to the state as CSOB would pay only CZK 4.5 bn at most in return for the guarantee.

Finance Minister Jiří Rusnok announced yesterday that loss from financial operations related to the imposition of forced administration on Investiční a Poštovní banka and its subsequent sale to Československá obchodní banka would reach CZK 90-95 bn.

Trade in the Czech koruna was quiet and the currency stayed in a narrow range of 33.74-77 to the euro. Late on Tuesday the koruna was steady at 33.77 to the euro from the morning's 33.79 and 33.81 late Monday, staying near all-time high of 33.72 from last week. The CZK/USD was flat at the morning level of 39.88 and up from 39.96 late Monday.

The state 6.95/16 bond rose 35 basis points to 100.20/50, from late Monday, yielding 6.92/89 percent from 6.96/93. The state 6.75/05 rose five basis points to 102.15/45, yielding 6.06/96 percent from 6.07/98.
