The leader of CSSD (Social Democrats) Jiri Paroubek surprisingly announced that party ended post election talks with ODS (Civic Democrats). Among the main arguments there are program and some personal reasons. CSSD started coalition talks with KDU-CSL (Christian Democrats). Please note that if CSSD and KDU create coalition even with possible tolerance from Greens, they will not have majority in the Parliament. It means that they will need support from KSCM (Communists) to win a confidence vote in the Parliament. Despite of pre-election, post-election promises and program of the KDU-CSL, its leader for the first time admitted Communists support. According to statement made by Mirek Topolanek, ODS will present minority Government which should lead to early election and will try to get support across political spectrum.
Our view:
KDU-CSL’s U-turn is very surprising. However it can lead to the Government which could win confidence vote. The mandate to form the Government has currently ODS, but the President previously stated that he would give chance also to CSSD if ODS fails. There are three attempts to create the Cabinet. Note that CSSD and KDU-CSL can easily agree on social program.
