An agreement between the three coalition parties to form a majority Cabinet collapsed yesterday as the leadership of the Social Democratic Party (CSSD) rejected it. CSSD was unhappy that the two coalition parties proposed appointing their own top official into the new Cabinet while the prime minister would have to leave. CSSD will now be running a minority Cabinet but is willing to try to reach a new agreement. A minority Cabinet would however not survive a vote of confidence without support from the Communist Party, which could split the Cabinet itself. Note that seven ministers have already resigned from the Cabinet; i.e. 3 from the Christian Democrats (KDU), 3 from US-DEU and 1 independent. However, the president has not signed their resignations yet. The possibility of early elections thus rears its head again.
