Unemployment remained flat in August at 8.5% of workforce. The actual number of unemployed grew by 4 thousand, i.e. inline with most forecasts. Unemployment has been showing signs of rising strains since the spring and the August number only confirmed the picture. By the end of 2001, we expect the unemployment rate to dip briefly and then end the year at 8.5%.
