The Prime Minister V. Spidla announced his resignation from the PM position and as the Social Democrat party leader following the meeting of the SD's 183-member Central Committee on Saturday where he failed to find sufficient support for his Cabinet. Formally, the Cabinet will submit its resignation after its meeting this Wednesday. Shortly after that, the President will appoint a new prime minister to form a new Cabinet; discussions among the major political parties are expected to také several days or weeks. There can be three attempts to form a Cabinet and win a vote of confidence from the Parliament before early elections are called.
The President V. Klaus has already announced his plans to také part in discussions among three parties, out of which he will likely select the next Prime Minister: the Social Democrats (70 out of 200 MPs), the right-wing Civic Democrats (57 MPs) and the centrist Christian Democrats (21 MPs); the SD (under the new leadership of former vice-chairman S. Gross) will be most likely asked to form a new Cabinet.
