In-line with previous statement the president named the government on Tuesday, January 9. This is the second government after the general election, which took place last year on June 2-3. The government coalition consists of ODS (Civic Democrats), KDU-CSL (Christian Democrats) and Greens. The leader of ODS Mirek Topolanek who created the cabinet plans to meet with opposition CSSD (Social Democrats) to negotiate support for his government. Note that new government must ask for parliamentary confidence in 30 days, but Topolanek plans to do it sooner.
Our view:
Today’s press speculates that the new government could support up to three Social Democratic members. Current coalition has equal votes in the chamber as opposing CSSD and Communists and in case of deserters’ tolerance could win confidence vote 103:97. We see support from deserters as questionable as none of them clearly said YES. If the second cabinet fails there is third (last) attempt to form government and subsequently an early election.
